Navigating the Seas of EthicsThis paper was written by a fellow student and is used with permission. I was assigned to perform substantive editing. The purpose of this paper was for the author to establish a personal code of ethics that will guide the author throughout their editing career. As I edited, I focused on whether the paper answered the question of the prompt—that is, I made sure everything tied back to the author’s personal code of ethics (as opposed to simply explaining why it is important to be ethical). I pointed out areas where I thought the author was strong. I also added transitions to increase cohesion and checked arguments for lack of evidence or logical fallacies. I did not comment on inserted, incomplete bullet points because I knew this was a first draft and that the author was planning on expanding those points in a later draft. Also, as a note, the author’s title was added later, and it was based off a suggestion I made at the beginning of her essay.
