Booklet: A Brief Academic Guide to the Octopus |
Here are the instructions I was given for this project: “Edit a 10,000-word Wikipedia article (or series of articles) on an appropriate topic and turn it into a booklet. The booklet’s purpose will be to give readers some information about a subject and to pique their interest so they will want to find out more about it. Think of a coffee table book. The Wikipedia article(s) should require substantive editing and copyediting. Your subject should also require the use of at least four images, tables, graphics, or some combination.”
I worked in a team with two other students. We edited the booklet for an audience that wants a slightly more than a basic—yet brief—overview of the octopus. As a team, we came up with an agenda, created a style sheet for consistency, performed substantive edits and copyedits, set up the document in InDesign, proofread the manuscript, and printed it. The project was designed to showcase the substantive editing skills we acquired after a semester of study.
